Matt + Janelle | Engagement

Had a wonderful time with this wonderful couple last week. Lots of hugs and smiles all around. After getting some much needed coffee we headed out to the Cheonggyecheon (청계천) to snap some wintery photos and try our best not to freeze to death. Janelle is a tough girl. Matt and I were suffering and complaining over the cold; Janelle never once complained.

I had a lot of fun. Congrats on your upcoming marriage.

My girl friend and I engaged too before the last week and walked around Jongro. Your photos remind me of the good memories. Thanks.

Marthaler Family Adoption

Loved loved loved this shoot. I always love adoption shoots, but not all of them are equally fun. There’s nothing like the energy and excitement of a room full of semi decently behaved children. Too well behaved and they’re boring; not behaved enough and their obnoxious. But these three kids, all adopted from Korea, had just the right mix of excitement, goofiness, and mischievousness. I had a lot of fun playing with them. And their parents are obviously wonderful people. This was their 4th adopted child from Korea.

We started the day off meeting the foster parents for several of the older kids. Frankly it’s much a chore to the kids, but a very exciting experience for the foster parents. As a photographer that just sees the babies for an hour or so I’m often curious how they’ll be in several years. So I can imagine that feeling multiplied by several million by a mix of motherly instinct and  1-2 years time spent together. We then all jumped into the gotcha room and  chaos exploded. Two years of patience and excitement blew up volcano-style when the two parents and three siblings met their new brother.

Congrats guys. Best of luck.

Daniel Tudor

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Daniel Tudor this weekend. Mr Tudor is the Korea correspondent for The Economist, and the author of a new book called Korea: The Impossible Country. I haven’t read it yet to be honest, but it’s next on my reading list. It’s received stellar reviews. So if I ever make it through the several thousand photos in my “need editing” folder, I’ll get on it. Apparently it’s sold out in Korea, so stayed tuned for more prints or grab the e-book edition.

The following photos were taken for 10 Magazine, an excellent local magazine for expats and tourists here in Seoul. Every month 10 Magazine and Barry Welsh hold a book club, which I intend to check out in the future.

[…] Korea-knowledgeable I learned a lot and highly recommend it. Also Daniel is a cool guy I had an opportunity to shoot a few months […]

Nice photos, especially the one with palace wall behind.

Lafler Family Adoption

The twins!! The twins are absolutely adorable. The adoption started out with the twins eating their lunch, and then lunch time never actually ended. They are like those mechanical vacuum cleaner robots, eating everything in sight. At one point one of the girls grabbed her sisters milk and replaced it with her own emptied cup when she wasn’t looking.

This gotcha session was full of emotions. Every one is, but some more than others, and on a scale of 1-10 this was definitely a 10. There were peaks of laughter like when the foster mom revealed that one of the favorite things for the girls to do is to retrieve diapers from the waste bin and smear it everywhere. Or the reaction from the new parents when they found out the twins sleep during the day and wake up around 3am and play. But there were also peaks of sorrow as the foster mother was terribly heartbroken from separating. It’s impossible to imagine letting go of a child. But I was glad to be there to capture both the final and first embraces.

Congrats.
